Pocket differencesshow when the pages turn
When choosing a display book or 11-hole sheet protectors, the spec you see most is “thick” or “thin”. The list that shapes daily use is longer: whether the opening separates easily, how clearly documents read, how smoothly pages turn, how stable the sealing is, and whether the hole edge stands up to everyday pulling. Judge pockets by use first, then weigh thickness, surface, opening, sealing, and the mounting structure together.
Types
Which type is it?
Fixed display book pockets
Pocket pages are bound into the spine or cover structure and are not swapped by the user. What matters is whole-book turning feel, thickness as page counts grow, seal positions, and the spine structure.
11-hole sheet protectors
Pocket pages load into ring binders through their holes and can be added or replaced. Beyond the pocket body, confirm hole count, spacing, hole shape, hole-edge width, and binding-mechanism compatibility.

- Pocket thickness and softness
- Glossy, matte, or embossed surface
- Clarity and how documents read inside
- Opening position and easy-open design
- How many documents each pocket will hold
- Seal position, appearance, and pull while turning
- The bound edge or hole-edge structure
Thickness
Read thickness together with the structure
No fixed numbers divide thin, medium, and thick here, because the feel also depends on material condition, texture, pocket size, and structure. As a general direction:
Lighter
Soft and light in hand; with many pages it keeps the whole book’s bulk and weight in check — good for sorting, carrying, and high page counts. With frequent swapping, heavier loads per pocket, or stressed hole edges, check sealing and mounting too.
Medium
A balance of turning, clarity, bulk, and everyday wear. Whether it fits is confirmed by loading the intended documents into a fully assembled sample book — not by touching a single sheet.
Heavier
Pages feel substantial, pick up singly, and turn with clear feedback. The full book also gets thicker and heavier as pages grow; opening, sealing, and hole-edge strength still need separate checks.
Thickness on current products
Current thickness ranges
For reference, current 11-hole sheet protectors use nominal film thicknesses from about 0.035 to 0.06 mm, and multi-hole pockets from about 0.04 to 0.10 mm. These values describe specific finished constructions, not a general custom range — judge them together with page count, sealing, and the hole edge.
Specifying for a project
For an OEM / ODM inquiry, state the intended pocket count, typical contents per pocket, desired page feel, opening direction, and binding format, with the nominal thickness, tolerance and measurement method where one is already set; film thickness is then evaluated together with surface finish, sealing, and edge construction on a finished, loaded sample.
Surface
Glossy or textured
Glossy film
Documents read most clearly through glossy film — text, tables, and photo detail stay recognizable, suiting uses where reading clarity comes first. In exchange, glare, fingerprints, fine scratches, and film-on-film cling show more.
Textured or orange-peel film
Surface texture reduces full-face cling, so openings and pages separate more easily and turning friction feels different. The cost: documents are viewed through the texture, so fine text, photos, and high-contrast artwork look less sharp than through glossy film; texture depth varies, so “orange peel” alone is not one fixed spec.
Matte effects
Softer glare and look, with some loss of see-through sharpness. For fine images, ID documents, or drawings, compare with the real documents inside.
- Reading text and charts — favor glossy and higher clarity; also check glare and cling.
- Frequent browsing, easy-open pockets — compare textured surfaces or easy-open designs; also check document clarity.
- Business look with soft reflections — consider matte or fine textures; also check fine text and photos.
- High page counts, controlled bulk — choose softer pages; also check sealing, holes, and the real load.
- Single pages swapped often — weigh opening, thickness, and sealing together; also check per-pocket capacity and handling.
Opening
How easily does the pocket open?
Pockets of equal thickness can still open differently. Factors include glossy or textured film, the cut of the opening, easy-open structures, static and cling, opening direction, how much each pocket holds, and where fingers grip.
Top opening
Documents load from the top — the most common structure in display books and sheet protectors. Check how easily the opening is found, and whether documents shift when pages turn or the book is held upside down.
Side opening
Documents load from the side, changing how pages are handled and where hands meet the opening. Suitability follows the finished orientation, binding position, and how it is used.
Stepped or notched easy-open
A height difference between front and back films, or a local notch, lets fingers separate the opening easily. Designs still balance document coverage, pocket strength, and looks. No single opening suits everyone — handouts, catalogs, quotation sets, and daily working files all load and travel differently.
Sealing
Sealing affects both stability and appearance
Pockets are sealed by the method suited to the material and structure. You do not need to know the equipment — these points are all visible on the product itself:
- Whether the seal line is continuous and consistently placed
- Whether sealing visibly puckers or skews the pocket
- Whether the seal is overstressed at the intended load
- Whether turning pulls the pocket against the seal
- Whether the bound edge sits flat against the pocket
A wider, deeper, or more visible seal line is not automatically stronger. Seal performance is a combination of material, thickness, equipment conditions, line shape, position, and real load. For custom projects, state the sheet count and thickness each pocket must hold, then confirm with a finished sample — not by asking for “a stronger seal”.
Flipping
Judge page turn on the finished book
A blank single film says little about how a full display book turns. Page feel depends on film thickness and stiffness, pocket size, surface friction, page count, binding position and spine space, load per pocket, and the size relationship between cover and pages.
For light, quick turning
Control single-page weight, whole-book thickness, and page-on-page friction, and keep enough spine space.
For a distinct single-page feel
Choose a stiffer or heavier film — while checking the full book does not get too heavy, too thick, or hard to lay flat.
For a book that opens flat
Beyond the film, look at spine width, binding method, page count, and cover creases — changing pocket thickness alone rarely fixes it. When confirming samples, load close to the real quantity of paper, then test turning, lying flat, standing, and carrying.
Hole Edge
On 11-hole pockets, check the hole edge
The body of an 11-hole pocket can be very soft, but the hole edge takes repeated ring opening, turning, and pulling. Confirm four things:
Hole count, spacing, and shape
“11 holes” alone does not ensure a fit — check the actual mechanism’s ring count, spacing, hole shape, binding direction, and pocket size. Complete, clean holes
Punched edges should be tidy, with no offset thinning the hole rim; once loaded, holes should not sit permanently pulled outward by the rings.
Hole-edge structure
Hole-edge width, material thickness, and reinforcement differ by product. Whether an edge is reinforced, how it is reinforced, and how much use it withstands all depend on the actual product and project.
Document weight
The more a pocket holds, the greater the force on the hole edge with every turn. For heavier loads, test holes and seals at the real load — not with an empty pocket.
One further point: “PP” by itself is not a photo-safe or archival-grade claim. For photos, ID documents, special inks, or thermal paper needing long-term storage, confirm the relevant testing and storage conditions separately rather than relying on the material name.

Frequently asked questions
Glossy or orange-peel — which is better?
For document clarity, start from glossy; for easier opening and a different turning feel, compare textured or orange-peel surfaces. Decide with the real documents inside.
Is a more visible seal line stronger?
Seal strength follows material, thickness, processing conditions, line shape, and real load; how visible the line is cannot represent strength on its own.
Are PP pockets right for long-term photo storage?
For photos, ID documents, or archival needs, check whether the product carries the corresponding testing or storage-use statements; the material name PP is not an archival grade.
