Same base resin,different feel — why?
A PP folder can look like “just a sheet of plastic”, yet feel completely different: soft and easy-turning, or crisp and upright; clear enough to read through, or opaque and defined by its color. The difference is not only thickness — material condition, surface texture, finished size, crease structure, and downstream processing all play a part. For established products and custom projects alike, first decide what this sheet must do in the finished product, then pin the spec down with thickness, stiffness, and processing conditions.
Spec Checklist
Seven things a material spec should state
Thinner, bendable material is often called PP sheet; stiffer, self-supporting material is often called PP board. In practice the names are not consistent, so “sheet” or “board” alone cannot settle thickness or performance. A workable specification covers all of the following:
- Where it is used — cover, divider, box body, or support board
- Finished size and structure
- Thickness, and the acceptance method both sides agree on
- Expected stiffness, flexibility, and spring-back
- Clear, tinted-translucent, or opaque
- Glossy, matte, or another texture
- Whether it will be creased, folded, cut, riveted, or printed
The same sheet behaves differently in different sizes and structures: an A4 cover, a narrow spine, and a large support board bend in different ways, so one product’s material spec cannot be copied straight onto another. As a starting point, by use:
- Covers that fold softly — check crease lines, spring-back, surface, and opening feel, not thickness alone.
- Binders that stand upright — check board stiffness, finished size, and the mechanism’s weight and structure, not the word “board”.
- Contents that must read clearly — check clarity, color, surface texture, and print coverage, not just the word “clear”.
- Clipboards that give steady support — check flatness, flex, size, and the real load, not maximum thickness.
- Covers carrying brand printing — check base color, surface state, ink, and processing positions, never a screen mock-up alone.
Thickness
Thickness is only part of it
Thinner is not worse
Thinner PP is usually softer and lighter, and keeps multi-layer builds from getting bulky — good for folding, carrying, and volume control. With sound structure, creasing, and usage design, thinner material can still meet what the product asks of it.
Thicker does not always fit
Extra thickness adds presence, but “thick” does not equal more durable, better turning, or better printing. Too thick, and covers fold badly, spines spring open, and the product gets heavy.
“Stiffer” can mean several things
Not drooping when held is mainly stiffness; recovering after a bend is spring-back; resisting cracks after repeated folding is toughness; and whether the surface picks up dents and scratches involves surface hardness and texture. A sample, or naming which property to improve, beats writing “make it stiffer”.
Thickness on current products
For reference, selected current A4 sleeve constructions use nominal PP thicknesses from 0.12 to 0.20 mm. These values describe specific finished constructions, not universal grade boundaries or a blanket custom-production range. For OEM / ODM work, define the nominal thickness, tolerance and measurement method, then validate stiffness, crease performance, surface appearance and print performance on a finished sample.
Clarity And Surface

Clear
For products where cover data, labels, or contents must be read directly. Real clarity still varies with sheet thickness, tint, surface texture, and viewing angle.
Tinted or translucent white
Keeps some light through while adding color or a softened look. It is not fully colorless — white paper, color prints, and dark documents will each show differently inside.
Opaque
For hiding contents, building a color series, or carrying full brand printing. For specified colors, bring the sheet’s base color into sampling — never judge the finished color from a screen proof alone.
Choosing the surface:
- Glossy — shows contents most clearly, but fingerprints, fine scratches, and glare show more.
- Matte — softer look with less glare; see-through detail is usually less sharp than glossy.
- Textured — adds touch and depth and hides fine marks, but texture affects clarity, print detail, and color impression.
No one surface fits every use. If documents have to be read through the material, compare actual see-through quality first; where appearance, feel or color matters more, weigh haze and texture as well.
Creasing
Judge creasing on the finished product
Folder covers usually need crease lines, folds, or a formed spine; parts of the trade call pressed crease lines “K-lines”. Whether a crease works cannot be read off a flat sheet’s thickness — confirm:
- Crease positions and spine width
- The finished opening angle
- Material stiffness and spring-back
- Whether the crease crosses printed artwork
- Pull from rivets, mechanisms, or refills
- Opening behavior with documents actually loaded
The steadier approach is a finished-product sample in near-production material, loaded with the intended documents or mechanisms — not sign-off on a flat, unprocessed sheet.
Printing
Printing depends on the base material and the processing
Print adhesion on PP depends on the surface state, pre-treatment, ink system, and drying or curing conditions, so it is tested on the actual material with the intended print method. Before custom printing, confirm four things:
Base color
The same ink looks different on clear, tinted, white, or dark PP. For higher opacity or exact brand colors, white-ink layers or other print arrangements may need evaluating.
Surface texture
Fine text, thin lines, and large solids behave differently on each texture. The finer the artwork, the more it needs proofing on the actual material.
Processing positions
Crease lines, cut edges, rivets, mechanisms, and sealed zones can all affect artwork position and integrity. Get the finished die line or the effective print area before layout.
Acceptance method
Agree on the standards for color, registration, adhesion, scuffing, and appearance before production. Where color is critical, a physical sample confirmed by both sides is the primary reference.

Materials And Recycling
Materials and recycling
Most LAN CHYN products use polypropylene (PP), identified by resin identification code 5, as the main body material. This code identifies the resin; local acceptance for recycling varies. Where components such as metal fittings, paper parts or labels can be safely separated, sort them according to local requirements; otherwise follow local guidance for the assembled product.

Frequently asked questions
Is thicker PP board more durable?
Thickness changes stiffness, weight, and folding feel; durability also depends on material condition, finished size, creases, mechanism attachment, real load, and processing quality.
Can PP be printed directly?
Printing can be planned; it is evaluated against the surface, print method, ink, and pre-treatment. For brand colors, fine text, or adhesion requirements, run a proof on the actual material.
Should I give a thickness, or a sample?
Ideally both. A stated thickness gives a measurable specification; a sample shows the stiffness, texture, clarity, and overall feel that numbers alone cannot describe.
